The 90's

The 1990’s began with high hopes. In the latter part of 1990, a membership meeting resulted in approval of a clubhouse-remodeling plan. At the suggestion of Tom Watson, a golf architect, Scott Miller, was employed to prepare a master plan or renovation of the golf course.

On May 3, 1992, a celebration of the completion of the first phase of the course re-do was held, featuring an exhibition by Tom Watson and Oakwood golf professional, Bill Baraban, on holes five through eight.

In 1992, Hans Weyh retired as Club Manager after 22 years of service; he was replaced by Claudio Caviglia. In 1992 a long-sought Olympic-sized six-lane pool was installed. In 1993 work on the tenth, fifteenth and sixteenth holes, primarily replacement of greens, was completed.

In 1997, five new greens designed by Golf Architect Craig Schreiner were opened for play, and a new practice range tee became operational. Golf Course Superintendent, Jeff Elmer, who had replaced Gil Collins after the latter’s retirement, assumed responsibility for the course and worked with Schreiner to prepare the new green at the first, second, third, fifteenth, and seventeenth holes.

In 1997, the Board of Directors unveiled their long-range planning project, “Vision 2000”.

In the same year, the Dedicated Tree Program was inaugurated, and the Country Club District Women’s Golf Association invited Oakwood women to participate.

In 1999 the first American Junior Golf Association tournament ever in the Kansas City area was held at Oakwood. We agreed to be the original site as part of a rotation among the better private clubs in the area. About 100 boys and girls under college age from throughout the country came here for a stroke-play competition. Oakwood members who came to watch were delighted with the kids and pleased with the efficient management of the event by the AJGA staff. Also in 99, Oakwood hosted the Country Club Swim Championships. With 1500 swimmers competing each day for three consecutive days, Oakwood had a chance to shine for thousands of KC area country club members. The event was a huge success and Oakwood will look forward to hosting the Swim Championships again in 2009!

In 2000, Oakwood was honored to host the Missouri Golf Association’s leading event, the Match-play Championship. About 150 of Missouri’s best male golfers were our guests.

With a well-established day-camp program, first-rate golf facilities, strong golf and tennis staffing, a quality food service that makes private parties a memorable experience, and rooms that can accommodate many large events from weddings to bar and bat mitzvah parties with distinction, Oakwood stands today at the threshold of a new millennium in a strong and confident position. The best is yet to come.
