The 80's

Among the major influences on Oakwood in recent years, the revival of the day camp is near the top. The first camp director of the new era, Skipper Feingold, was an experienced leader who came in 1981 and established a format that attracted many young children of members. Very few clubs in this area operate such programs, but this one helped draw more young married couples to Oakwood and reversed a trend in average membership age.

In 1981, Herman Scharlau retired, and was replaced as golf professional by Billy Peterson. He in turn resigned in 1988 and was replaced by Bill Barbaban.

The ice storm of 1983 caused the destruction of old Bermuda sections of some fairways, and these were replaced successfully by zoysia stripping.

The improvement to the east-end of the clubhouse in 1986 provided members with a halfway house-food and beverage facility and toilets easily accessible to golfers. More storage space for food service equipment also became available.

Tennis players were provided with a clubhouse and toilet facility, which also serves the campers. Earlier, a covered area was created to accommodate campers for food service and protection-required activities.

The Missouri Men’s Golf Championship was held for the first time at Oakwood in 1986 and won by Don Bliss of St. Louis.

As the decade ended, plans were being completed for a new and larger swimming pool so that Oakwood’s young swimmers could continue to compete with representatives of other local clubs in inter-club events. The construction began the following summer season of 1990.

As the decade of the 1980’s closed, the membership rolls were full—over 675 members of all classifications were listed. The plant had undergone almost continuos upgrading.
