The 60's

In 1960, the members approved a proposal of the E.T. Archer Company to purchase a pump for use in watering the first nine holes, piping and sprinklers, and installation of U-3 Bermuda grass on the fairways. The cost was to be $82,000 to be paid for with a $6 a month assessment over 36 months, plus cart income. Bermuda grass testing began, and was hopefully, the proper coverage for our “rocky, thin topsoil acreage.”

In 1963, Arnold Garfinkel won the first of six club championships, and Fred Kornblum served as president of the Kansas City Golf Association. Herman Scharlau scored the best round of golf ever at Oakwood, a course record 61, on August of the same year.

In 1967, the construction of US Highway 435 along the south edge of the course caused water problems for that end of the course, when rainwater rolled off the embankment. In October an automatic watering system for the greens was installed. Leonard Rose won the first of four club championships in 1967. As 1969 ended, Bob Benish left Oakwood again to enter private business. Steven Pigg replaced him temporarily.
